I’ve been coaching a client who is in graduate school and writes A LOT. They’ve been refining their writing strategy over several months, specifically to write sooner and faster.

Previously, they would put off essays or papers for weeks, and when they did start, they struggled to feel like their ideas were good enough. The result was lots of stress, they constantly felt behind, and — of course — they produced less writing.

Over time, this person has improved their process a lot. The other day, they synthesized these five strategies for writing a quicker paper, and I thought they might be helpful for others.

Try out these tips if you’re a student, write for work, or have personal writing projects you’ve been putting off.

1. Start early

Whenever we put something off, it gets harder to start. We simultaneously habituate ourselves to not doing it (making it easier to push down the to-do list) while the “bigness” of doing it seems to grow.

The answer is to begin immediately. (really — right after you read this, set a 5-minute timer and start the writing…
